He was part of the Proteas U-19 World Cup winning squad in 2014, but went largely unnoticed, having played a solitary game without any significant contribution. He was also part of the Dolphins set-up that toured India for the Champions league later that year. He didn't have a great tournament there either. He went back to the drawing board and worked meticulously on honing his skills. It was 2015-16 season in which he first tasted success and emerged as the highest wicket-taker for the Dolphins in the T20 competition and was swiftly elevated to the South Africa XI for a tour game against the visiting English side in Kimberly.
His consistent performances on A tours caught the attention of the selectors and was fast tracked into the national side for the ODIs against Ireland and Australia in 2016 at home. He was one of the key architects of the Proteas' 5-0 whitewash against Australia. A groin injury he suffered in a domestic game stalled his progress but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for him. Phehlukwayo made a comeback for the ODIs against Sri Lanka and evolved as a death-overs specialist for South Africa. Subsequently, he was included for the Champions Trophy 2017.
A few days later Andile was drafted into the Test squad against England for the 4-match series but didn't feature in any Test.
What to expect in the 2019 World Cup:
Of the various allrounders tried after the 2015 World Cup, Andile Phehlukwayo has had the longer and most consistent run. He was also part of the Markram's U-19 World Cup winning squad. So, he becomes another player who has tasted success in a big tournament and does not carry the baggage that South Africa usually carry. Phehlukwayo brings his three dimensional skills to the table - batting, bowling and fielding. His lower order prowess is growing with every game and the clever medium pace will play a handy role in the middle overs. He is a sure starter in South Africa's XI and a key member on who's shoulders the campaign depends.
