Profile
A classic Mark Ramprakash case of South African cricket - a domestic legend, but not quite making the cut for the national side. That may be a little harsh, but Rassie van der Dussen is rather unfortunate not to have played for the national team - because of the abundance of all-rounders, the quota system, or otherwise.

A top-order batsman for the Lions in South Africa, van der Dussen averages more than 40 in first-class cricket and List A cricket, and a relatively underwhelming scoring rate in T20s. He is a rare breed of bowler - a part-time leggie, and can go for a few runs but has a knack of picking up wickets. If his bowling skills can be cleaned up, van Der Dussen is likely to be on the radar for a national call-up even at the brink of 30.

The call-up eventually came a few months before the World Cup as he debuted in January 2019 against Pakistan. A string of consistent performances in the next couple of series saw him claim a ticket for the mega event in England.

What to expect in the 2019 World Cup:

Rassie van der Dussen has almost a similar career map as his skipper Faf du Plessis. Overlooked as youngsters and brought into the side just before the World Cup to give the batting order some stability. Faf did it in 2011 and van der Dussen is doing it in 2019. He only made his ODI debut a few months ago and now finds himself playing the biggest tournament of his life. However, he has close to 100 List A matches to his name and over a decade of experience to bank on.

His batting also is more or less like du Plessis. He is not known as a big hitter of the cricket ball or a boundary collector. van der Dussen is more of a grafter and a decent player of spin bowling. In his short career, he has shown consistency with the bat and keeping the scoreboard moving. Since he will be occupying the number four spot the rest of the batsmen will look to play around him.

T20 Leagues

He was drafted into the 2018 Caribbean Premier League as an injury replacement for the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, having been picked on merit after scoring an unprecedented 959 runs in 10 matches in the Sunfoil series of 2017/18.

He was also picked for the inaugural Global T20 league in Canada by the Vancouver Knights. He ended up as the team's highest run-getter (255 runs) and subsequently made the cut for the Highveld Lions after exhibiting more urgency in scoring, bringing about a true revolution in his T20 game.
