He was part of the New Zealand under- 19 team that played in 2003-04 and soon impressed the people at Northern Districts to draft him into the squad. In 2006-07, he repaid their faith with a superb showing with the bat becoming the teams second highest run scorer that season. He went a notch higher next season, averaging above 60 in the ODI format for the Northern Districts.
His stunning and consistent showing earned him a place in the national squad. He was chosen for the series against Pakistan in 2009 but was not included in the final XI for the ODI series. His wicket keeping skills got him a spot in the T20I game following the ODIs.
He also got a chance to prove his Test credentials, when he was chosen ahead of Peter Fulton for the 3rd Test against Pakistan. He did justice to his selection getting to a quickfire 60 in the second essay. Watling finally made his ODI debut in 2010, when he was picked for the Tri series that included Sri Lanka and India.
On his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in August 2010, Watling top-scored for New Zealand with 55 runs. He was in and out of the New Zealand squad after that many a times losing his place to the likes of Kruger van Wyk and Luke Ronchi. In 2012, Watling performed brilliantly in the West Indies and Sri Lanka ODI series. He registered his personal best score of 96* against Sri Lanka in the 3rd ODI at Pallekele.
2013 was again disappointing and he was dropped once again after a few ODIs. In Tests, however, Watling has done slightly well as compared to the other formats of the game. He scored his maiden ton against Zimbabwe in 2012 helping the Black Caps posting an intimidating total that allowed them to win the one off Test by an innings and 301 runs. He continued this form in 2013 putting up consistent performances in the Tests against South Africa and England. Watling scored 173 runs in the 2 Tests against Bangladesh in October 2013, which included his second Test ton and retained his place in the Test squad.
Watling scored his third Test ton (124) against India in the second Test and along with Brendon McCullum put up a fighting 352-run record 6th-wicket stand to save New Zealand from a likely defeat. In retrospect, that one performance has been the turning point in his career. Since that knock, his Test average has seen a marked rise over the next two years. There was a hundred against England at Leeds which contributed to a famous win in 2015. Even though his limited overs career has not been moving smooth, he is primed to be a regular face for New Zealand behind the stumps in the longer format for days to come.
