Gujarat Giants vs Mumbai Indians Women, 1st Match
Mumbai Indians Women won by 143 runs
That's it from our side! Not the start that we expected as a neutral and lover of the game, but Mumbai Indians couldn't have asked for a more impactful start. Trouble early on in the tournament for Gujarat as Mooney hurt her knee but hopefully, she will be fine soon. Tomorrow, a double-header is coming your way. Let's hope we get to witness games going down to the wire. Till then, goodbye and take care!
Harmanpreet Kaur | Mumbai Indians captain: I think it was a brilliant start, it felt like a dream come true. First day and whatever we did it worked well for us. We kept things simpe and clear. Told players to play natural. It is a big day for women's cricket and we talked about expressing ourselves. I watched the ball nicely and backed myself. Whatever came my way, I backed myself and it went my way. (On the team chat at the halfway mark) When we were batting, we knew it is a very good batting wicket. When the other team was bowling in the right spot, it was not easy to play. So told our bowlers it will not be easy if you bowl in the right spot. And I am happy that every bowler bowled well. It's a big day and a big victory for us and the way we started, we are really happy.
Nita Ambani, Owner, Mumbai Indians - Iconic day, iconic moment for women in sport, just happy to be part of the WPL. I love every moment, want girls in the country to take up sports, live their dreams and make a career of it. MI is known for its fearless and exciting cricket, the girls have performed so well and I'm really proud. Special mention to Harman, she played a special innings, Amelia Kerr was fabulous, batted and bowled well, enjoyed every moment today. Wonderful to see so much support, great to see men and women come to the ground to support women's cricket. All the best for all the teams in this tournament.
Sciver-Brunt - The crowd was incredible in the first half, they got tired in the second half. A bit of an occasion, it is exciting, it is a big thing for womens cricket. Thats the best thing about playing in different conditions, you learn a lot of things. Saika is the most exicting person after she takes a wicket. There is a lot of local talent and that is exciting. (On Harmanpreet) It is very good to be in the same team. She is incredible, she looks so calm on the crease, she played brilliantly today.
Sneh Rana | Stand-in captain, Gujarat Giants - It's just the start, some of the players soak it up early, some will take time (on players getting ready at this level). A learning curve for us and we'll come back strongly. The physio will be better placed to explain (on Mooney's injury). I want to stand-up for whatever the team needs, if I do get captaincy, we'll try and execute our plans better. This was just the first match, we need to keep our heads high, we have players who have done well at the domestic level and we'll certainly look to comeback stronger tomorrow.
23:06 Local Time, 17:36 GMT, 23:06 IST: It has been a completely dominant performance from Mumbai Indians and they are off to a flying start in the WPL. They would have dreamt of such a start and they would be absolutely overjoyed! On the other hand, it has been a nightmare for the Gujarat Giants. After losing the toss and put into bat, Mumbai Indians ticked most of the boxes right, with good knocks from Sciver-Brunt, Matthews, Harmanpreet, and Kerr. A score above 200 meant that there was immense pressure on Gujarat and they crumbled under that. With Mooney getting injured in the first over, they were already staring down the barrel. After that, they lost 4 wickets inside the powerplay which completely pushed them back. They couldn't recover from there. Only two batters got into the double digits and that tells you the story. Saika Ishaque was the star for Mumbai with the ball, as she took a 4-fer. Stick around for the presentations..
15.1Saika Ishaque to Monica Patel, out Bowled!! 4-fer for Saika Ishaque and she is over the moon! A quicker one on a length around off, spinning in sharply, Monica Patel looks to pull it away but misses and the ball hits the top of leg. Mooney won't come out to bat again because of an injured knee, and that's it. A thumping start to the WPL for Mumbai Indians as they win by 143 runs. Monica Patel b Saika Ishaque 10(9) [4s-2]

14.5 Matthews to Monica Patel, 1 run, Monica Patel turns this one to square leg for a brisk single
14.4 Matthews to Monica Patel, no run, dropped! Short ball outside off, Monica Patel cuts it with the spin towards Vastrakar at cover point. It comes at a comfortable height to her but she makes a mess of it. You got to take such easy catches, no excuse for those

GGT: 56-8 after 14 overs
13.6 Jintimani Kalita to Hemalatha, 1 run, another slower one on a back of a length outside off, dabbed towards short third and the batters take off. A loose throw from the fielder allows Monica Patel to get in with ease

13.4 Jintimani Kalita to Monica Patel, 1 run, low full toss, tailing into Monica Patel as he whips it away towards deep square leg
