Commentary

Joburg Super Kings jump to the fourth spot with this nervous win. On the other hand, Sunrisers Eastern Cape's three-match winning streak comes to an end. They'll be keen to bounce back quickly. That's a wrap for tonight. Tune in tomorrow for another double-header. Until then, goodbye.

Faf du Plessis | Joburg Super Kings captain: Pretty nervous. It's important to get a close game like that. From a batting point of view, the guys will have a huge confidence. We were excellent, the way we bowled was unbelievable. Our fielding was excellent. I should have gone through and made sure to take it home. It surprised us. It was slow and low, there was a little bit of grip in both the innings. As a bowling unit, we are doing the right things. Today is a huge step in the right direction for our batting line-up.

Aaron Phangiso | Player of the Match: It's hard work. I was given an opportunity to participate in a tournament like this. Practice, practice, practice and experience. I try to stick to my strengths and hit that good length. The wicket did a lot. I stuck to my lengths. (Mindset after getting reported) It was tough, but with the support I just got through it. This is actually for my family and friends. This the best performance I have put given the circumstances.

Aiden Markram | Sunrisers Eastern Cape captain: Nice and close in the end. 20-odd runs more would have been ideal for us. To take it down to the last over showed a lot of character. Really happy with the fight we showed. It was tough initially to work it out as we lost wickets. We wanted to be around 140-150 but we scrapped our way to 120-odd. We felt there was quite a bit of variability. It was about building pressure and picking wickets. Very well bowled. That could be a blessing in disguise (playing another game tomorrow). We can sweep this aside and start fresh tomorrow. We'll give it a good crack.

20:59 Local Time, 18:59 GMT, 00:29 IST: Phew! That was a close encounter. Spirited bowling performance from the Sunrisers. After getting bundled out for a below-par score of 127, Eastern Cape fought hard with the ball. Sisanda Magala provided the early breakthrough as he usually does but Joburg Super Kings had a good powerplay as they scored 47 runs and brought the asking rate below 6 RPO. It should have been a stroll in the park for the visitors but that wasn't the case as SEC applied the brakes with spin. All the three spinners bowled superbly and JSK were put under immense pressure. Leus du Plooy, the in-form batter, struck a couple of boundaries in the 18th over. But van der Merwe, the one who never gives up, bowled a superb penultimate over conceding just five runs. Eight runs were needed off the final over and Magala bowled three yorkers to keep the game on the knife's edge. However, anticlimactically, Magala overstepped ... and ... du Plooy scored a boundary to take his team home with a ball to spare.

19.5 Magala to Leus du Plooy, no ball, FOUR, Magala misses his yorker by an inch or two. Leus du Plooy moves back and across to swing across the line. Gets a thick inside edge that eludes the diving backward square leg fielder before running away to the fence. Oh, an anticlimactic end to the game as Magala has overstepped. Joburg Super Kings win by 5 wickets!

19.4 Magala to Shepherd, 1 run, high full toss, Shepherd swings across the line and the batsmen steal the single. Got an inside edge onto his body and the ball died down the on-side. Just below the waist...

Equation: 6 runs | 3 balls. One hit away. What's Shepherd thinking?

19.3 Magala to Leus du Plooy, 1 run, another one in the blockhole, Leus du Plooy can only clip it towards mid-wicket

7 runs | 4 balls.

19.2 Magala to Shepherd, 1 run, yorker again, Shepherd swings hard and gets an inside edge onto his pad. The ball dies down on the off-side for them to steal a single

8 runs | 5 balls.

19.1 Magala to Shepherd, no run, Magala slips in a yorker, Shepherd can only jam it back at the bowler

Magala to bowl the final over. Equation: 8 runs | 6 balls.

JSK: 120-5 after 19 overs

18.6van der Merwe to Shepherd, 1 run, yorker length, jammed to long-on. Brilliant stuff from van der Merwe who finishes with 4-0-16-2! Just 5 runs off the penultimate over

18.6 van der Merwe to Shepherd, wide, spears a full delivery too wide outside off, left alone

18.5 van der Merwe to Shepherd, no run, very full delivery, drilled by Shepherd but straight to extra cover. A loud cheer for the dot

18.4 van der Merwe to Leus du Plooy, 1 run, dances down the track, converts it into a half-volley and smashes it straight down the ground. A full-length dive to his left from the running long-off fielder. The batsmen, strangely, took just a single...

18.3 van der Merwe to Shepherd, 1 run, low full toss, drilled down the ground and van der Merwe dives to his right and deflects it towards mid-on

18.2 van der Merwe to Leus du Plooy, 1 run, fullish outside off, cut to deep point
